Objectives
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Use comparative philosophy as a tool to understand thinking in different geo-political and cultural contexts.
- Understand the forms, limitations and potential of interphilosophical dialogue in the contexts studied.
- Explore forms of cross-pollination between different philosophies as an enrichment of the philosophy itself.
- Discuss the different perspectives in confrontation.
Students should also achieve a high level of critical thinking autonomy.
Learning outcomes and competences
In the articulation between the program and the objectives, the UC seeks to recognize the comparative methodologies in Philosophy and how they allow for a hermeneutics that are differentiated from philosophical traditions, making them come out of themselves and broadening the horizons of problematization. It is also intended to stimulate autonomous and grounded research, in order to understand what a conceptual approach is in speculative traditions that formalized issues that seem to be close to each other in different ways.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The UC is based on reading and commenting on texts from the literary tradition (philosophical, poetic and speculative) of Portuguese language in India, China, Africa and the Americas. This way of entering the comparison between philosophical traditions is accompanied by a discussion of the methodologies of this new field of philosophical studies. Distributed assessment without final exam, based on participation and discussion (20%) of an individual written essay (80%).
