Objectives
Masters in GIS and Spatial Planning must devellop projects of relational databases, the supporting technology of current GIS solutions.
The geographic data comprises alphanumeric data, in common to relational databases, but also a spatial component.
In this sense, the program focuses on the design of relational databases, with a strong focus on conceptual modelling of problematic situations, its conversion to the relational model with an awareness of its normalization.
Additionally, the geographic data components are analysed, together with spatial extensions to relational databases. The differences to the project of a database for GIS are also described.
Learning outcomes and competences
At the end of the course, the student should be able to design a database for a GIS. More specifically, the student will be able to:
- Identify the fundamentals of relational databases and database management systems;
- Create the conceptual model of a relational database;
- Develop the logical model of a relational database, taking into account aspects related to normalization;
- To coordinate the construction of a geographic database using a GIS or spatial database;
- To conduct analysis through the use of the SQL language.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Classes are TP, with an exhibition of some key issues, which are developed through case studies and problem solving, as well as the use of tutorials. At the end of the semester students develop practical work in groups with tutorial. At the end of the semester students develop a practical assignment, in groups, under the supervision of the teachong staff.
