Objectives

The aim of this subject is to provide students with knowledge in three areas: analysis of linguistic variation theories and study methods; its application in the specific field of the history of the Portuguese language; and its integration in a more general perspective, within the scope of Romance linguistics.

Object and method of historical linguistics. The ‘Sources’-critique of evidence
From Latin to Portuguese - vernacular Latin - the main features.
Romanisation of the Iberian Peninsula: the “Iberian block” within the scope of Romania; substrata and superstrata. Linguistic individuality in the North-West of the Peninsula. Consequences of the ‘Reconquista’ - the portuguese dialectal panorama.
Medieval Portuguese - fluctuation, dominant tendencies and linguistic pattern. Juridical medieval texts - specific structures. The linguistic pattern moves towards the south.
Classic and modern Portuguese. Innovative traits. Connections between dialectology and history of language: evidences of dialectal areas, Brazilian Portuguese, Portuguese Creoles. Development of the linguistic pattern definition and reduction of fluctuation; re-Latinisation of the language. The knowledge of language by the 16th century grammarians.
Changes after the 16th century. Linguistic evolution and orthographic reforms.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Classes will be student-centred, stimulating the sensibility to understand the historical linguistics concepts and the texts from different diachronic periods of the Portuguese language.
An attempt will be made to favour individual research, critical thinking and problem solving, avoiding the lecture.
Main attention is given to the active participation in class, by the achievement and submitting of small projects.
The chosen methodology enables the students to develop analytical capacity to study critically medieval and classical Portuguese texts within their linguistic and historical contexts. The syllabus and the respective methodology are instruments which allow a competent and open interpretation of the studied texts.
The discussion of theoretical concepts related to historical linguistics and the identification and characterization of the different historical periods of Portuguese language allows the learning of the fundamental aspects of linguistic periodization.
The analysis of several texts representative of specific periods of Portuguese develops the capacity to recognize the phases of the diachrony of Portuguese.
Evaluation: distributed,( i.e, based on a written work on texts of different diachronic periods), with final exam.
