Objectives

Key aspects of theory related to the practice of German as a foreign language will be highlighted in both semesters. The main objectives to achieve in the first semester include: -Development of students’ awareness of issues related to second language acquisition and learning; -Improvement of their scientific competences; -Continuous improvement of the command of the German language by reading specific cientific literature -Acquisition of specific German classroom vocabulary -Training of the skills of planning, monitoring and evaluation of learning processes;
 -Development of critical thinking skills with regard to the questioning of teaching practices and their theoretical frameworks; 
 -Development of systematic and continuous rethinking of education in broader terms.

In addition, visits to different schools are organized in order to confront the students with various teaching methods and learning environments.

A key goal of this semester is the planning of German lessons. To do so, various theoretical and didactic models are presented and discussed. In this learning process students acquire the skills and knowledge necessary for the elaboration of lesson plans, putting them into practice through micro-teaching sessions.

Learning outcomes and competences

In order to continue and enhance the learning outcomes of the first semester, students are expected to develop the following skills:

- Training in the skills of planning, monitoring and evaluation of learning processes;


- Active participation in solving tasks as well as in discussions, dialogues and debates

- Continuous improvement of the scientific knowledge and the language skills relevant, not only for the master degree but also for future activity as a teacher of German

- Improvement in reading comprehension of certain genres of oral and written academic texts in German (by reading scientific articles in the field of didactics)

 -Development of a complete lesson plan using a special grid and specific terminology

 -Research, select, evaluate and adapt learning materials

 -Development of teaching materials

 -Development of critical thinking skills with regard to the questioning of teaching.

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

This course assumes familiarity with the contents studied in the UC of German Didactics I.

Program

Theory:

-Current issues and aspects of methodology and didactics of German as a foreign language;
-Cultural aspects of German-speaking countries and intercultural learning;
Types of exercises for teaching / practicing the different skills;
-Planning and execution of lessons and subsequent reflection

 

Practice:
Analysis of lesson plans and teaching units, preparation of exercises and activities for the different stages of a lesson; practical use of technical aids and the computer in the classroom, micro-teaching.

-Analysis of textbooks and program content

-Analysis of the actual teaching contexts in Portuguese State Schools
-Analysis of various teaching methods,

-Study visits to the Secondary School "Bridge School" in S. Tomé de Negrelos

-Classroom visits are provided for trainees in cooperating schools.
