Objectives

This seminar will focus on the tendencies and/or trends of 19th century Portuguese ethical-political thought, in order to provide a systematic vision of the philosophy of each selected author bearing in mind the historical and cultural context of each. By establishing a link with the schools of thought of philosophy, an essential objective of this seminar is also to emphasize the unity and diversity of ethical-political reflection in Portugal during the 19th century.

Learning outcomes and competences

This degree implies a consolidated scientific training and good practice research techniques. The link between the program and objectives, seek to deepen these techniques and skills, aimed at consolidating this training, seeking to stimulate an autonomous research route and grounded.

Historical and philosophical synthesis and criticism of the Portuguese ethical-political thought from the 19th century:

1. Introduction to the Sources; Objectives; General draft of an ethical-political reflection.
2. Main ethical-political schools: from liberalism to traditionalism.
3. The beginning of the Republic and Positivism.

5. Democracy and Human Rights

6. The responsibilities of intellectuals in political theories and practices (in Portugal and in the world);
7. Utopias and Dystopias: threats to democracy, resulting from scientific and technical evolution;
8. Portugal, European, Atlantic and Lusophone dimension;
9. From the "Causes of the Decay of the Peninsular Peoples" to the causes of the decay of the contemporary world: geopolitical and environmental issues.

The teaching method adopted in this Seminar gives students the central role by which, based on research and critical thinking, and with the active contribution of all students in debates, they will be able to develop their research path. This option does not exclude the role and responsibility of the lecturer and it aims for student to develop the necessary skills.
