Objectives

The students should:

1. get acquainted with the functions and the potential of libraries to human sciences research;
2. be familiarized with basic methodologies of research; 
3. be aware of the potentialities and risks of exploring the internet;
4. have full consciousness of ethical duties during researches.

1. To develop the abilities for critical reading and assessment of materials.
2. To understand and to comply with rigorous methods of planning, developing and presenting academic work.

Program

1. Reading: 1.1. Levels and contexts of reading. 1.2.Historical periods in Occidental Culture; 1.3. (De)construction of the literary canon; Facts, Testimonies, Opinions, and types of Arguments; 1.5. True, Objectivity and Pertinence.

2.Documentation 2.1. Definition and typology of “document”; 2.2. A brief history of material documents; 2.3. The invention of the Press: from incunables to e-books; 2.4. The nomenclature of the book; 2.5. What is a library today?

3. Research:  3.1. Types of bibliographical references: author-title (ISO 690, NP 405) and author-year (APA). Essential elements of main types of documents; 3.2. Types of Bibliography: active and passive, specific and general; 3.3. Types of Catalogues (manuscripts, printed, digital, etc.), databases and search engines; 3.4. Types of Classification: DDC, UDC.

4. Methodology: 4.1. The State of Art: from bibliography to reading notes; 4.2. Definition of the subject and the problem; 4.3. Structure of the composition: introduction, development and conclusion; concept map; 4.4. Exposition of arguments: agreement, opposition, cause-effect, amplification, specification; 4.5. Rhetorical strategies: simplicity, correction and precision: a) good practices to quote; b)  some technical, ethical and juridical questions about plagiarism; c) some questions of style.

5. Academic works: 5.1. Rules and advice for written papers: abstracts, essays, thesis, reports, etc; 5.2.Rules and advice for oral or hybrid works:  paper presentations, powerpoints, posters, etc.

Attending 75% of classes, unless established otherwise by law.

Calculation formula of final grade

Continuous assessment (class attendance and portfolio with, at least, 1 of each type of research work, previously defined by the teacher:

1. an encyclopedical entry or a developed project of bibliographical research and
2. a full report of a conference or a written presentation/oral debate about a book or a chapter of a book in the mandatory literature.  

Portfolio = 50%

Test or Exam=50%

Obs. Mandatory minimum at the final exam: 10/20 points. In coutinous assessment, the teacher can include also an oral test.
