Objectives
The aim of this subject is to provide students with a wider knowledge on the richness of the contemporary Mozambican literature on several levels (thematic, aesthetic, linguistic and historical), by summoning founding texts and authors of the modern literature to help contextualize the plurality of the experimented routes.
The students must be familiarized with the most important works of this emerging literature and must acquire competences to recognize and discuss the peculiar discourse strategies of the authors, their aesthetic creations and the related processes of individual and collective identity assertion.
Learning outcomes and competences
At the end of teaching Mozambican Literature”, students are expected to have acquired a steady knowledge of the main trends in Mozambican literature. At the same time, it is expected that students are able to produce a critical discourse based on the points of the programm.

1 – Questions of social and cultural framework
2 – Voices of resistance and assertion of the Mozambican identity:
2.1 – The poetry of Noémia de Sousa and José Craveirinha;
2.2 – The narrative work of Luís Bernardo Honwana.
3 – Post-independence period:
3.1 – War, memory, quest, realism and the fantastic in Mia Couto’s Terra Sonâmbula;
3.2 – The novel of manners, the orality and the voice of women in Mozambican literature: Balada de Amor ao Vento by Paulina Chiziane;
3.3 – The fantastic and the art of telling stories in Os Olhos da Cobra Verde by Lilia Momplé;
3.4 - Eduardo White: lyricism’s as a form of resistance and hope;
3.5 – Luís Carlos Patraquim: from the African presence to the inscription in a universal literary tradition – poetic dialogues and cross-checking.

In addition to the above mentioned literature, other specific literature will be recommended during the semester.
Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical classes. Presentation of the programme content by the teacher. These classes can, in certain circumstances, become theoretical-practical classes.
Practical classes. Analysis of and comments to the literary and critical texts related to the content presented in theoretical classes. These classes can assume the form of debates or individual/collective works.
Sessions of tutoring with individual guidance of the work developed by the students, if the number of students can allow for this type of guidance.
