Objectives

1- Understand and place preservation and its management in a systemic approach, as part of the organizational information system (OIS) management and throughout the information life cycle (theoretical, organizational, strategic and operational perspectives)

2- Acquire basic knowledge/skills to provide long term information preservation and continuous access (models, requirements, strategies, processes, techniques, tools, services), considering the nature of information, layers to be preserved, flow/life cycle phase, production / acquisition / capture, processing, selection, organization, representation, communication, retrieval, use and storage options/methodologies, and technological platform / medium on which it is recorded

3- Acquire the ability to collaborate in the planning / implementation of a preservation politics, strategic plan and operational/preventive and safety plan; a digitization project and creation, management and certification of digital repositories (either in digital or hybrid information systems).

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical and practical lectures with discussion and students active participation.

Presentation of case studies, projects, relevant activities and study visits.

Where appropriate, it will be explored the use and manipulation of resources, tools and applications specifically related to information preservation (following case studies and project’s presentations).

Distributed assessment with final exam: 2 hours exam without consultation (50%) + Research work, individual or in a group (40% - including (70%) a written report + (30%) oral presentation in the classroom); classes attendance and participation (10%)

A student may also present an optional work (individual): increases up to 2 grade-point (0/20) in the assessment component "Research work".

Eligibility for exams

According to the Assessment Regulations in force.

Calculation formula of final grade

1) Individual assignment (IA) - 50%  written exam without consultation (2 hours)

2) Group assignment (GA) - 40% Practical work (including 70% (a written report) + 30% (oral presentation in the classroom))

3) Personal attendance and participation (PA) - 10% (75% classes attendance and participation).

Final grade = IA (50%) + GA (40%) + PA (10%).

Examinations or Special Assignments

Not applicable.

Internship work/project

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

According to the Assessment Regulations in force.

Classification improvement

Exam and Written Report (Practical Work) may be subject to appeal and improvement of classification.

Observations

The practical work includes a mandatory component (under the topic of preservation in the digital environment) and an optional component (to be defined according to emerging themes and/or presentations and external visits).

The assessment necessarily involves performing all specified mandatory components (individual and group assignments, oral and written components).

The written component will be submitted during the exams períod and the oral presentation will occur at the end of the semester (in classroom space). This presentation is a prerequisite for admission to the exam.
