Objectives
This course teaches students the principles and techniques of information representation and will help them to demonstrate the ability and competence in applying techniques, standards and other instruments for organizing and representing information and database construction. Students should also understand the fundamental role of technology in sharing information stored in databases.
Learning outcomes and competences
Understand the theoretical and methodological principles for the organization and representation of information.
Understand the structure of information retrieval tools.
Acquire the ability to use and apply standards of bibliographic and archival description.
Understand the structure of the metadata schemes commonly used in libraries and archives and know how to use them.

1. Organizing and representing information: contextualization in both technical and morphological poles of the “quadripolar” method.
2. Information retriever tools: concepts, types and characteristics.
3. Metadata: characteristics, types and purpose.
3.1 Principles and application of metadata for networked information-resource organization, representation, retrieval, and interoperability.
3.2 Metadata models, schemes and standards.
4. Principles and standards of descriptive cataloguing.
4.1 Standards for bibliographic description: ISBD (Consolidated).
4.1.1 Outline of the ISBD (consolidated), punctuation data elements sets.
4.2 Standards for archival description: ISAD(G).
4.2.1 Outline of the ISAD(G), punctuation data elements sets.
4.3 ICOM ( International Council of Museums) standards and Guidelines.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Lessons will be both practical and theoretical, with emphasis on student involvement, and will consist of lecture, discussion and some in-class exercises of bibliographic description of all sorts of documents, using the international standards and software applications.

The attendance at 75% of the classes is required, except as required by regulation.
Calculation formula of final grade
The final evaluation will combine a test (20%) an assignment (20%) and a final exam (60%).
