The syllabus of the course, structured in two main phases, discusses the major paradigms in the field of Communication Sciences and Information. In the first phase the contents focus on a historical perspective of the construction of scientific knowledge in this area and on discussing how the complexity (Morin) and technological (Castells) paradigms influence the development of contemporary knowledge. In the second phase each student focuses its attention on an in-depth study of the current state of knowledge on a specific topic that is of his/her personal interest and which falls into one of the areas of research that support the doctoral program. In this second phase the students are strongly encouraged to use the resources and tools of search, retrieval, sharing and communication of scientific information deployed by the institutions promoting the program.
