Objectives
1. Provide an overview of how Portuguese literature (poetry and novels) developed in the 16th century
2. Study in greater death the literary innovations introduced by the narrative of Bernardim Ribeiro, regarding the common practices in the sentimental and chivalry Iberian literature.
3. Delimit and define the specific features of the literary practices of Sá de Miranda, António Ferreira and Luís de Camões within the Renaissance lyric poetry and its theoretical concepts.
Learning outcomes and competences
At the end of the module, the student should be able to:
1. recognise the specific characteristics and diversity of the literary polisystem of Renaissance Classicism, in both its National and European dimensions;
2. Identify the innovative concepts of poetry and poet in the works of Da de Miranda and Antonio Ferreira, and to articulate those concepts with their literary practice;
3. Situate Cmonian lyricism within European Petrarchism, indicating similarities and differences of its poetical practice in comparison to other Renaissance poets - Portuguese, Italian and Spanish;
4. Recognise and interpret, within its cultural and literary meaning, the innovations that were introduced by the narrative of Bernardim Ribeiro in the framework of Iberian fiction with a chivalric and sentimental matrix;
5. Practice a critical reading of classical literary texts, commenting them appropriately.

The poetry of Dr. Francisco de Sá de Miranda and the introduction of Petrarchism in Portugal. 2.2.2. Poemas Lusitanos by Dr. António Ferreira and the assertiveness of Classicism. 3. Luís de Camões – literary representative and critical conscience of the Portuguese Renaissance: 3.1. The 1595 and 1598 editions of Rimas. The canon. 3.2. The Petrarchism of Camões and the autobiography. 3.3. The love theme and the world view of Camões lyric poetry.
