Objectives

Students are intended to to both deepen the lexicon and master the grammatical, morphological and syntactical structures of Latin which will, where possible, be related to that of Latin and Portuguese.

Students are also intended to apply this knowledge to the translation into Portuguese of more difficult original texts and into Latin of short sentences.

At the end of the semester, students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of grammatical and lexical structures studied by translating texts (Latin / Portuguese, Portuguese / Latin).

1. Morphology

1.1. Particular cases of nominal and pronominal inflexion.

1.2. Verbal inflexion

1.2.1. The conjunctive mode (perfectum).

1.2.2. Noun forms: infinitive, gerund and gerundive; participles; supine.

1.2.3. Periphrastic conjugation: active and passive.

1.2.4. Irregular verbs.

2. Syntax

2.1. Relative conjunctive clauses.

2.2. Complement clauses.

2.3. Subordinate circumstantial clauses.

3. From Latin to Portuguese: etymology and semantics.

4. Translation of selected texts by Plautus, Martial and Suetonius.

5. Literature and culture

5.1. The drama in the archaic period: the “italum acetum” in Plautine comedy. 

5.2. Martial and the daily life in Rome in the imperial period.

5. 3. Illustrious figures in the biography of Suetonius
