Aims: An interdisciplinary approach, providing accurate, detailed and summary information, to critically discuss and raise awareness of some of the major and recurrent issues in Portuguese culture over time. The main programme guideline consists of providing elucidative and consistent frameworks on the evolution of mythogenesis and historiographical representations that the Portuguese have developed in the course of time, in terms of their identity and their role in history. Skills and learning outcomes: Students must be able to: a) explain the role of romantic and positivist historicisms in establishing our contemporary notions of “nation” and “national culture”; b) in light of the sources, explain the characteristics of the Portuguese historic providentialism of the Ancien Regime; c) explain the 19th century changeover from the “Sebastianism” belief to the realm of literary history and cultural history.

I - From the concept of “culture” to the concept of “Portuguese culture”. Romantic and positivist historicisms on the issues of the roots and specificity of Portuguese culture. II - The construction of the official historic memory of the kingdom: the reconquest, the establishment of the founding myth of Ourique and the justification of the expansion. III - From the imperial project of D. João to the imperial project of D. Sebastião. The Crown, the training of competences and the Discoveries. Expansion, the Humanistic Renaissance culture and the shaping of mentalities. The post-Tridentine ideological context. IV - From the crisis of the empire to the Fifth Empire (from A. Vieira to F. Pessoa) Alcácer Quibir and the genesis of Sebastianism. From the realms of belief to the realms of literature and culture.
Theoretical presentation of programme contents, critical analysis of basic sources / texts, individual support to students to develop their writing and research skills.
