Introduction to the design process. Studying the language and its graphical elements. Definition of methodologies, exploration and analysis of the design, development and implementation of project ideas. Combine technical skills with visual and critical thinking. Understand the role of graphic design in the registry and the information in the formal organization of the elements of thought. Understanding the visual communication and design as the expression of a planned purpose. Reflect on the main functions of the design in its didactic, communicative and artistic. Provide both practical and theoretical understanding of basic visual communication elements and techniques, typography, color, image and infographics.
Acquire knowledge level of graphic language and its elements. Possess ability to define methodologies for the development and implementation of ideas for projects, including for infographics. Acquire autonomy to reflect on the main functions of design and visual communication based on creative thinking.
1. Introduction to Visual Communication and Design. Delineating the concept. Elements of semiotics image. Gestalt Theory or Theory of shape. Basic elements of visual communication (image building). Visual communication techniques.
2. The Visual Communication and Design. The century of typography and book. The centuries of transition and standardization. The Industrial Revolution. The Modern Era. The Postmodern Design. The graphic design in the global village.
3. Typography. Delineating the concept. Anatomy of type. The word image. The letter as a material representation of visual phonics and drawing as an autonomous function of its textual.
4. The Image. Delineating the concept. The significance of the images. The language of images. The Illustration. The photography, the new tool of communication. The relationship between word and image.
5. The Color. Delineating the concept. The color theory. The meanings of color. Color attributes. Patronized color systems. Application of color to visual communication.
6. Design and Infographics. Framework of the concept. History and evolution. Classification of computer graphics. Principles of design applied to computer graphics. Basic concepts and elements of layout and visual narrative. The computer graphics and diagramming languages as alternatives to conventional text. Production oriented infographics.
Expository theoretical classes on programme contents, along with projections and comments using audiovisual aids. Supervision, discussion and analysis of assignments done by students on the topics of the subject.

Mandatory attendance of 75% of classes, unless established otherwise by general law and in the FLUP Assessment Regulations.
Continuous assessment with final exam (100%):
Proposal 1 - 30%
Proposal 2 - 30%
Proposal 3 - 40%
Failure to attend 75% of classes, in the cases established by law, may require an oral discussion of the assessment items presented, to be indicated by the lecturer by the end of the respective semester, and a new written test on the subject contents.
As provided in the FLUP Assessment Regulations.
Proposals for continuous assessment work whose contents have not been discussed and regularly supervised by the lecturer (1 or 2 weeks) will not be accepted. Dates will be scheduled for the submission of assignments. Except in cases provided by the regulations, failure to meet the deadlines for submitting course work given by the lecturer will professor, will affect the assessment. All assignments must be submitted on the scheduled dates, in the Moodle platform.
Given the pactical nature of the curricular unit, registrations will not be accepted after the end of February.
Students should have access to the UP email account (SIGARRA) and consult it regularly, as a preferred means of communication used by teachers.
