Objectives
This course will analyse the close and complex interaction between economics and politics. Thus, we will examine the main actors in this process, discussing the role of the state and of politics and policy-making in the framework of a market system. The syllabus will cover the emergence of political economy and its evolution until present times, aiming to highlight how the role of the state has changed over time. Moreover, we will analyse some major issues in contemporary political economy, namely by taking into account their relevance for public debate and their treatment by differents platforms of the media.
Learning outcomes and competences
This course aims to develop students' capacity to analyse some of the major issues regarding the role of the state and the major economic and political arguments presented in that respect. Moreover, it is also evisaged that the students develop the ability to formulate a substantiated opinion about the relevance and the shortcomings of the intervention of the state in the framework of a market system.

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)
Prior knowledge of some basic economic concepts will enhance students' capacity to progress and learn. Some basic knowledge in economic history will also be an advantage.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Classes will combine lecture elements with more interactive periords requiring the active participation of students, in order to stimulate students' participation. Additionally, the aim is to foster the discussion of issues that will be addressed in the individual research work, namely of major themes in contemporary debates in political economy.
