Objectives

The purpose of this course is to lead the students to a close contact with Galician-Portuguese and Portuguese texts of the Arthurian prose romance, namely the «Livro de Galaaz e da Morte do rei Artur» (usually known as «Demanda do Santo Graal»), and to elucidate the social, cultural and aesthetical conditions surrounding the translation and circulation of that literature in Portugal and in Iberian context. The reception of those textes and the way they conveyed social models, myths and literary technics to Portuguese cultural milieu will be a major focus of inquiry.

Learning outcomes and competences

The current syllabus aims at providing students with the knowledge of the fortune of Arthurian romance in Portugal, namely with the whole set of texts that formed an articulated narrative cycle. Since nowadays only remain two ancient Portuguese texts – «Estória do Santo Graal» and «Livro de Galaaz e da Morte do rei Artur» («Demanda do Santo Graal») –, the main goal of the course will be to ascertain what was the constitution of the cycle that circulated in Portugal and part of the Iberian Peninsula. Bearing in mind that the cycle has had a wide diffusion all along the Iberia, this task will be undertaken with the aid of the French manuscript tradition, the extant Iberian fragments of larger texts and the romances that survive only in late Castilian redactions («Baladro del Sábio Merlín» and «Lançarote de Lago»). Only after that archeological work is accomplished will the students be able to understand the general structure of the Arthurian plot and to perceive the contribution of this literary corpus to the development of Portuguese literary language in the late Middle Ages.
