Objectives



  1. Improving the knowledge already acquired in the field of translation (theoretical and practical);

  2. Developing the practice of using the working tools available to translators: dictionaries, encyclopaedias, glossaries, websites…

  3. Gaining awareness of the many factors that compete for translation practice and reception;

  4. Strengthening linguistic, communication and cultural skills;

  5. Developing a critical spirit (individual and group) in relation to translations (their own and those of others);


Learning outcomes and competences

Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:

1. carry out the basic tasks required in the various phases of a translation project (pre-translation, translation, post-translation) so as to achieve an acceptable quality standard of translation;


2. conduct a functional, pragmatic analysis of narrative, expository and argumentative texts at macro- and micro-structure levels (collocations, phraseology, terminology, information structure, register, style, etc.) in order to identify the text’s main function and the translator’s needs in terms of language and information;


3. distance themselves from the source-text to produce a fluent translation that exactly meets the final user’s needs;


4. carefully select and to appropriately use available online or human resources to solve translation-related problems;


5. justify their choices;


6. work in a team with a view to achieving better translation solutions.

Program

1. Reflection on translation and translator: methodological and deontological aspects.


2. Analysis of translated texts for the purpose of identifying and discussing the adopted techniques.


3. Application of the tri-phasic methodology. Selective and integral translation of narrative, expository and argumentative texts.


4. Individual project: 

Presentation of a personal and professional project defined
by the teacher at the beginning of the semester.


5. Translation as reflective practice;

a)Portfolio of translation practices (covering different
typologies of texts and different "target audiences");
b)Review and preparation for publication of texts.
c)Comparative analysis of some translations published
in Portugal of French or French-speaking texts.
