Objectives

To make available to students a large vision of the "Siglo de Oro", of the concepts of Renaissance and Baroque and, at the same time, perspecives focused on important facts and moments of the cultural evolution of the Early Modern Spain; to propiciate to students frameworks and critical perspectives about this historical-cultural period.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the semester, the students must be able to identify, problematize and apply with theoretical rigor the concepts of "Siglo de oro", Renaissance and Baroque; they must also be able to identify and frame the historical-cultural, literairy and artistic most imprtant moments and facts of Early Modern Sapnish Culture.

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

As the contents will be taught also in Spanish language, it is desirable that the students have at least a B1 level of linguistic competence in Spanish.

1. The concepts of "Siglo de Oro"/ "Siglos de Oro", Renaissande and Baroque;
2. From the Catholic Kings to Philip II: the cultural, politic, religious and social profound transformations, and its geographical frame.
3. Renaissance and Humanism: Ancient and Modern, Society and Culture, Arts and Letters, Language and Literature;
4. The transition between Renaissance and Baroque; the Counter Reformation;
5. The splendor of the Spanish baroque.

3 written tests, weighing 25% each
Oral presentation/participation: 75%

The evaluation is composed by 3 written tests (5/20 points each), to be made in the classroom on dates fixed in the beginning of the semester, and by an oral presentation (5720) of a text, theme or bibliography during the semester.

In the oral presentation of the selected theme, its clarity, understanding and tepht will be particularly valued, also considering the quality of the used information sources.
