Objectives

AIMS: This course aims to provide students of an introdutory knowledge about authors, genres and concepts of the history of theatre, in Portugal, during the 18th and 20th centuries. The presentation of an individual portfolio will stimulate a full review of the Theatre and Dramaturgy, with a progressive critical thought. 

Learning outcomes and competences

SKILLS: Over the semester, students must be able to: 1. reflect on the concepts of “Theatre” and "Dramaturgy", in Portugal, during the 18th and 21st centuries; 2. Know some canonical texts on Portuguese playwrights and the so-called “prevalent” genres of the contemporary period, and whenever possible, be aware of limitations of such canonicity; 3. Understand the strengths and frailties of a concept like "national theatre" to the history of theatre; 4. assess the variety and vitality, rhetorical and aesthetical, of some theatrical projects in Portugal.

I. Stories and History of Theatre. 1.“Homo sapiens” and “Homo ludens”. 2. Concepts of “paradramaticidade”/“paradramaturgical activities” and “teatralidade” /“theatricalness”. 3. Theatre vs. Literature?
II. The theatrical “reform” during the 19th century: rupture and continuity; 1. Reading the 18th century to understand the 19th century theatre: the "national theatre" and the “Volksgeist”; “the theory of clime”, “mimesis phantastica” and “mimesis icastica”. 2. The labyrinth of the “mimésis icástica”: classics vs. romantics? 3. Garrett’s project of a" national theatre". 4. The melodrama’s (r)evolution.
III. The 20th-21st century: forgeting or rewriting Aristotle? 1. “Statical dramas”. 2. “Strangeness”/Rupture; 3. “History”/“Poetry”; 4. Epic / Theatre. New approches.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes: exposition and comment of fundamental texts from the bibliography.
Practical classes: analysis of 3-5 portuguese plays, applying the theatrical concepts.
Workshop of reading technics.
Preparation of a personal portfolio with the exercices presented during the semestre (+ 3 theatre tickets).
