Teaching methods and learning activities

In this course students will have theoretical-practical sessions in which interactivity will be fundamental. Classes will be taught in Spanish, although students are allowed to submit both class presentations and exams in Portuguese. They will also have support materials available on Sigarra.

Required readings:
-A selection of poems available on Sigarra
-La vida es sueño - Calderón de la Barca or Fuenteovejuna - Lope de Vega
-Primera Parte del ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de La Mancha - Cervantes

With the main objective of bringing students to the knowledge of seventeenth-century Spanish literature, we will define the concept of  "Siglo de Oro " and we shall briefly recall the main features of the renaissance period, establishing links between the Renaissance and the Baroque, both at an aesthetic level and at a socio-political, economic, religious and cultural level.
Next, we will explain the concept of "baroque" and its reflection in the plastic arts of XVII century, relating the artistic and the literary phenomenon to the Spanish crisis of this historical period.
Then, we will start dealing with the main literary genres of XVII century, starting with poetry: the lyric renewal of Góngora and the discussion on "Gongorina" poetry through a critical analysis of the representative poems of Góngora, Quevedo and Lope de Vega.
Since in the exams/tests students are required to analyse a poetic text and due to the fact that not all students are familiar with this type of analysis, the approach to this part of the UC will consist of giving particular importance to practice in seminars. In addition, students will have the support materials available on Sigarra and will be able to look up the bibliography of the UC, especially CARRETER LÁZARO, F. and CORREA CALDERÓN, E. (1981)
Subsequently, we will start the study of the Baroque theatrical phenomenon: the creation of the "comedia nueva" of Lope de Vega, the theatre of Tirso de Molina and the improvement of Calderón de la Barca. Throughout the lessons we will comment on Fuenteovejuna, El burlador de Sevilla and La vida es sueño at a theoretical and practical level, starting from the analysis of representative excerpts.
The last literary genre to be tackled in this course will be the prose, particularly Don Quijote de La Mancha of Cervantes. The Primera parte del ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de La Mancha will be approached at a theoretical and practical level, starting from the analysis of representative excerpts.

This methodology will allow students to acquire a solid theoretical knowledge, applying it on the critical analysis of texts. In addition, the oral presentations will broaden their knowledge on this matter.
