Objectives
- Know the basic structures of Greek (morphological and syntactic).
- Use this knowledge to translate simple texts into Portuguese (original or adapted versions). - Learn the vocabulary indicated by the teacher (two hundred words).
- Recognise the Greek roots in the Portuguese lexical structure.
- Recognise the importance of Greek in shaping Western philosophical and scientific terminology.
Learning outcomes and competences
At the end of the semester, students should demonstrate knowledge of fundamental structures of the Greek language by translating Greek simple texts into Portuguese and writing easy sentences in Greek.

1. Morphology:
1.1. Noun inflexion:
1.1.1. The nouns - third declension: themes in occlusive, vowels, digamma and sibilant; flexion of "πατήρ", "μήτηρ", "θυγάτηρ", "ἀνήρ" e "γυνή".
1.1.2. Triformed and biformed adjectives (second class) and their degrees (comparative and superlative); the irregular "μέγας ".
1.1.3. Pronouns (interrogative, indefinite, possessive, demonstrative and relative).
1.2. Verbal flexion:
1.2.1. Tense and aspect.
1.2.2. Thematic verbs in -ω, contracted and non-contracted; future, aorist (sigmatic and radical) in the indicative and infinitive moods, and in the participle, active voice, middle and passive; aorist imperative.
1.2.3. Participles in the active, medio and passive voices.
2. Syntax:
2.1. The participle: nominal function and adverbial function.
2.2. Circumstantial complements; complement of purpose
2.3. Subordinate relative clauses (simple), complete and circumstantial (causal, temporal, consecutive and concession).

NOTE: In the scheme of continuous assessment, the final grades of 8 and 9 are not subject to oral examination.
