Objectives

At the end of the semester, students will be able to: 1. Situate Pragmatics as a linguistic area and its essential phases; 2. Understand the basic concepts of Pragmatics; 3. Develop and know how to apply the knowledge acquired.

Learning outcomes and competences

It is expected that students will be able, at the end of the semester, to understand the pragmatic dimensions of texts / discourses they encounter daily.

1. The area of linguistic pragmatics as:

1.1 system Linguistics VS system use Linguistics;

1.2. Evolution and brief history of Pragmatics.

1.3. Borders with neighboring areas.

2. general questions: the object of analysis, objectives and methodologies.

3. Speech Acts: the theory of Austin and Searle.

3.1. Types of speech acts.

3.2. Direct and indirect speech acts.

4. Grice’s Theory: the Cooperative Principle;

4.1. Conversational maxims.

4.2. Inference mechanisms: Theory of Implicatures.

5. Certain aspects of the theory of Relevance.

6. Courtesy Linguistics (Leech’s Theory);

7. Dialogism and polyphony:

7.1. Reported speech;

7.2. Irony;

7.3. Controversy negation.
