Objectives

-Use adequately the concepts and methods of Population Geography ;

-Understand the dynamic of the demographic system and how its components ( i.e. , mortality , fertility and migration) influence each other;

-Analyze the relationship between population dynamics and the social , cultural , economic, political, and environmental processes at different geographic scales;

-Collect, analyze, and interpret correctly the main sources of information used in the geographic analysis of population;

-Critical thinking eflect on Portuguese population problems and its influence on society economy;

-Integrate fundamental knowledge of Population Geography in building proposals for increasing natality in Portugal;

-Develop the students' responsibility for their own learning process;

-Develop reasoning and critical thinking

Learning outcomes and competences

a) Search, treat and interpret correctly and carefully the main sources of information used in population geography;
b) Explain the variation in the behaviour of demographic variables over time and at different scales;
c) Calculate and interpret different indices and rates used for the analysis of the demographic variables;
d
) Work in a team, fulfilling their tasks and sharing your ideas and being receptive to the other.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The preference is given to active learning methods instead of passive ones, using a student-centred approach.

- Lectures where the students are encouraged to have an increasingly active part in the description of contents by performing specific tasks

- Realization of exercises focused on the realization of the entire process: problem identification; selection of the most appropriate tehniques, look for the sources and data collection; purposes of the exercise; analysis and interpretation of results; mapping results; preparation of a report; oral presentation of results and discussion

- Individual specific tasks to identify the difficulties of each student and offer a personalized support

-Realization of specific tasks in group

- Formative assessment

-Summative assessment through a final exam.
