Objectives

The discipline of New Media aims first to familiarize students with the historical development and characteristics of the new digital media networks based on open platforms. It will be addressed then the specific nature of the World Wide Web as a network. The most recent participatory platforms will be analysed, and a theory of motivation that generate participatory dynamics in social networks is presented. The new practices of online journalism will be analysed , by contrast with forms of institutionalized journalism. An important objective of the course is to familiarize students with the principles of intellectual property laws , which will be applied to the specific case of new media . In particular, we will focus on the cases of electronic books and in the music industry. A final discussion will focus on the opposition between open versus closed platforms.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students must have the following competences:

 - To know how to frame the specificity of new media within the communicatiom media in general

 - To understand the concept of a network

 - To identify specific jornalísitic practices in new media

 - To master the imºplementation of the property intelectual laws in new networked digital media

Teaching methods and learning activities

In the theory-practical classes, a combination of expository lessons, student participation and practical implementation of knowledge acquired by the students, ie. presentation of work according to the course programme. Tutorials are designed for the development of activities related to individual and group work that students must present over the semester.
