Objectives

The study of political, social, religious and moral ideas of Romans, visible in their literary works, aims to enhance the knowledge of the models of European culture and the recognition of the educational and informative value of classical culture. 

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the semester, students must be able to: - Situate the figures and events of Roman history; - Discuss the relationships between rhetoric and politics, literature and ideology; - Identify and interpret the literary sources selected; - Present, critically, essential literature recommended for each topic.

1. The origins of Rome. 2. The Roman expansion and the Hellenisation of culture. 3. Rhetoric and political theory in the work of Cicero. 4. Augustus and the creation of a universal civilisation. 5. The Aeneid by Virgil. 6. Christianity and pagan culture. 7. The idea of Rome and the imperial ideology.
