Objectives

Successful students will have developed their independence and their linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic skills in order to achieve CEFR level C1 in most skills.

Learning outcomes and competences

Successful students will be able to:

1. understand extended oral and multimedia materials in standard spoken language or not, even when the speech is not clearly structured and when relationships are only implied;

2. understand complex specialised articles, technical instructions and literary texts, appreciating distinctions of style and interpreting implied meaning;

3. interact fluently and spontaneously in formal and informal oral communication situations;

4. deliver clear, detailed and coherent oral presentations on complex subjects;

5. write well-structured texts in a clear, precise and concise style appropriate for the reader in mind.

1. Self-assessment; identification of gaps and definition of strategies to fill them.

 

2. Oral skills development.

2.1. Understanding authentic materials, both in standard and non-standard language.

2.2. Individual topic-specific presentations and spontaneous or organised discussion (debates).

 

3. Reading and writing skills development.

3.1. Reading literary, scientific and technical texts.

3.2. Writing different types of texts, simple (message on a forum) or complex (reading report), in an appropriate style.

 

4. Linguistic, socio-linguistic and pragmatic skills development.

4.1. Strengthening of language skills: modality, cohesion and coherence, denotation and connotation, text types, language registers, vocabulary and phraseology.

 4.2. OIF and francophony: a multicultural community among others.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Interactive and task-oriented approach.

The proposed activities aim to develop students’ skills and autonomy by completing various tasks, individually or in a group, in order to achieve results to be shared in class or on the Moodle platform.

These tasks include (1) search for lexical information to be shared on the e-learning platform (glossary); (2) search for language resources and literary, scientific and technical materials to be commented and shared on the e-learning platform (forum); (3) group role-playing exercises (debates) and individual oral presentations; (4) writing several text types; (5) listening, reading and multimedia comprehension of authentic oral, written or multimedia materials; (6) reflection on learning outcomes.
