Objectives
For LLC: the students 1. should get acquainted with the functions and the potential of libraries in a human sciences researcher perspective. 2. Be aware of the potentialities and risks of exploring internet.
For students of Science of Language: The students should: 1. know how research in language of sciences is carried out through the development of methodological rigor and critical search; 2. develop the ability to use basic skills in the preparation and execution of research in this scientific domain; 3. know procedures and terminology used in oral and written presentation of linguistic studies, as well as basic equipment to collect and analyze data and results; 4. acquire a wide array of knowledge about field and experimental work; 5. reveal ability to participate actively in a project of linguistics; 6. improve ability to read scientific papers in the domain of language sciences; 7. develop the ability to carry out autonomous study in the field of linguistics.
Learning outcomes and competences
For LLC students: 1. To develop the abilities for critical reading and assessment of materials. 2. To understand and to comply with ridorous methods of planning, developing and presenting academic work.
For CL students: The students should have acquired the following skills: 1. knowledge of how research in language of sciences is carried out through the development of methodological rigor and critical reasoning; 2. Ability to use basic skills in the preparation and execution of research in this scientific domain; 3. knowledge of procedures and terminology used in oral and written presentation of linguistic studies, as well as of basic equipment to collect and analyze data and results; 4. acquistion of a wide array of knowledge about field and experimental work; 5. ability to participate actively in a project of linguistics; 6. ability to read scientific papers in the domain of language sciences; 7. ability to carry out autonomous study in the field of linguistics.

- Research: 1.1. Definition of “document”: 1.1.1. A brief history of documents and catalogs’ variety: manuscripts, printed, digital, etc. 1.1.2. Printed and digital publications, databases and search engines 1.1.3. Credibility: a) source, correction, authenticity, copy; b) distinction of fact, opinion and argument. 1.2. The memories’ typology and the research’s typologies: 1.2.1. Name: author, editor, translator 1.2.2. Topic: title, subject, keywords, UDC/ DDC 1.2.3. Chronology: ages, periods, currents, movement’s, edition year 1.3. The bibliographic reference 1.3.1. Two models: ISO 690 and APA 1.3.2. Types of reference: monographies, serial publications, print and online, etc. 1.3.3. Presentation of a Bibliography: order, extension, general and specific
- Reading: 2.1. The State of Art: from encyclopedias to recent papers 2.2. Structures of arguments: agreement, opposition, cause-effect, amplification, specification 2.3. The Reading note: paraphrases, abstracts, and quotation’s types 2.4. The Book Review and the Selective Bibliography 2.5. Subject vs. Thesis
- Presentation: 3.1. Definition: who, what, where, when, why, how 3.2. The plan: functions of introduction, development and conclusion 3.3. The text: correction, clarity and accuracy 3.4. Oral presentation: power-points, reading technics, etc. 3.5. Written presentation: types, composition and pages’ numeration.
For CL students: 1 – Research in language sciences. Preliminary remarks. 2 – Planning research in language sciences. 3 – Study development. 4 – Results. 5 – Different kinds of sources in research in language sciences. 6 – Specific methodologies in language sciences. 7 – Ethical and deontological rules. 8 – Oral presentations in language sciences. 9 – Written presentations in language sciences. 10 – Some applications of language sciences.

Eligibility for exams
Attending 75% of classes, unless established otherwise by law.
Calculation formula of final grade
For LLC students: continuous assessment (class attendance and portfolio with, at least, a research project and an observation report of a conference in FLUP): Exam=50%. Mandatory minimum at the final exam: 10 points.
For CL students:
The evaluation is the result of weighted average of the continuous assessment work without final exam. The evaluation items are the following:
1)Participation in a research project about a theme related to Linguistics (group work) – 9 points (in a scale of 1-20)
2)An observation report of a Linguistics’ conference – 4 points (in a scale of 1-20)
3)An individual written work about a theme of the syllabus – 7 points (in a scale of 1-20)
