Objectives


  1. To discuss the formative and cognitive value of teaching Latin.

  2. To understand the relationship of the teaching of Latin with the teaching and learning of other curricular and non-curricular areas, particularly the Portuguese language.

  3. To develop, select and adapt scientific referential knowledge to the needs, stages and places of the students’ learning process.

  4. To be become acquainted with effective, diversified teaching methods and strategies, adjusted to Latin teaching.

  5. To become acquainted with pedagogical-didactic tools and available resources and use them in real circumstances.

Learning outcomes and competences


  1. To prepare planning projects, didactical units in Latin language and Roman civilization and culture with a view to achieving a competent management of the programs at different levels and school years .

  2. To prepare materials adapted to the Latin language teaching.

  3. To prepare assessment tools for different aspects of the subject.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures, in which the teacher presents and discusses the course contents, analyzing and exploring texts previously provided to students.

Practical classes with individual or group work, subject to review and discussion by the group, in which students revise and deepen knowledge meantime explored in lectures.

Eligibility for exams

Class attendance (75% of classes). Positive mark in two research essays.
Written test only for the students that, because of some clearly justified reason, can not attent to 75% of classes.

Calculation formula of final grade

Class attendance and participation in class activities: 10%. Completion of two research essays :90% - 40% for each essay, 10% for oral presentation in class).
