Objectives
To develop students’ critical reasoning so that they can attain better skills as teachers of Portuguese as a Second/Foreign Language, based on the topics dealt with during the seminar sessions.
Learning outcomes and competences
To enable the students to deal critically with topics related to this curricular unit and to write academic works with the rigor required at this level.

1. Preliminary remarks concerning the central topic of Psychology, Psychology of Language and Psycholinguistics. 2. Acquisition and learning in the framework of L2. 3. Second language or foreign language? 4. Bilingualism/Plurilingualism from the perspective of Psycholinguistics. 4.1. Bilingualism as a continuum 4.2. Classical models of bilingualism and the models of the bilingual’s memory. 4.3. Lexical representation in bilinguals. 5. Different environments in L2 acquisition. 5.1. Critical periods in the acquisition/learning of L2 and in comparison with L1 acquisition. 5.2. Contextual and physiological implications of such acquisition/learning and its mode of processing. 5.3. The bilingual’s dominant language and its meaning as for articulation and working memory. 5.4. The influence of L1 proficiency on L2 proficiency. 5.5. Attrition in L1. 6. Information processing and individual differences regarding foreign language as a variable. 7. Brief neuropsychological reference to the multilingual speakers’ brain organization.
