Objectives

The students should reflect on the formative-cognitive and affective values of the mother tongue - Portuguese - as a way to access thought, world representation and human relations.
The students should develop grammatical, verbal, pragmatic and socio-cultural skills.
The students should acquire communication techniques as well as oral and written skills in order to use them efficiently in different situations

Learning outcomes and competences

The study of different levels of linguistic structure analysis allows a greater capacity of producing an adequate discourse. Studying the oral mode of communication and achiving tasks like reports, commentary narration; presentation; debate will improve discourse competence. Structure of some academic texts: production of written texts such as sumaries, critical revues, comentaries helps production competence and help dominate written expression skils like planning, textualization, revision. Analisys of the elemental maxims of the text: cohesion, connection, coherence in order to achive a better understanding and production of discourse. Discourse modality. Polyphony and the 'layering of voices' in discourse. The acquisition of communication techniques as well as oral and written competence develops grammatical, verbal, pragmatic and socio-cultural skills.

Communicative act - interactive act- Components;
Oral expression:- Specificity of the oral - (bi/unidirectional); spontaneous/prepared speech; Oral communication (bi/unidirectional);
Communic. skills: report/commentary/narration; presentation; debate.
Written expression: Planning, textualization, revision.
Fundamental text principles: coherence, cohesion; Text sequences;
Textual and discursive heterogeneity; polyphony; Utterance of language; discourse modality;
Variation and Language registers (formal, standard, every-day, non-standard in different verbal interactions.
Syntatic structure and textualization: the Complex sentence. Written text and ponctuation.
Lexicon enrichment appropriate to discourse production in oral and written comunication.

Teaching methods and learning activities

In order to develop the capacity to interpret and produce oral and written skils the classes will be student-centered, stimulating the sensibility to understand and produce oral and writen discourse. The students will prepare presentations, discussions and debates in small teams which will be later shared with the class. Other texts of different  types are also prepared in class like letters and e:mails. The students will also write academic texts such as critical appreciations; reports; summaries; synthesis; commentary.
An attempt will be made to favour individual research, critical thinking and problem solving..
Lectures and seminars. Tutorial. Supervision of elaboration of essays.
Distributed evaluation consists of a written essay that can also be presented in the class. It could consist of a critical appreciation of a scientif article. The evaluation also includes a written final exam.
