Objectives

Aims: This course aims, first of all, to provide students a series of pedagogical references on language and its antiquity as a scientific object, in particular in the epistemological fields of Philosophy, Rhetoric, Philology and Aesthetics. Secondly, and following the first introduction, students will reflect on the various functions of language and on the complex registers of Logos/ Reason, Ethos/ Custom and of Pathos/ Emotion, in both the institution of the so-called “common” language and “literary” language.

Learning outcomes and competences

 SKILLS: Students must acquire a series of pedagogical references on language and its antiquity as a scientific object, in particular in the epistemological fields of Philosophy, Rhetoric, Philology and Aesthetics.
II. Secondly, students nust be able to reflect on the various functions of language and on the complex registers of Logos/ Reason, Ethos/ Custom and of Pathos/ Emotion, in both the institution of the so-called “common” language and “literary” language.
III. They should also have a good perception of the importance of rhetorical figures as shapes of our knowledge, and a good understanding of various types of verbal and non-verbal language.

I. Aesthetics as Experience and as Science
1. Philosophy, Rhetoric and Aesthetics, complementary areas of linguistic knowledge.
2. Historical reasons the autonomy of Aesthetics: Baumgarten (1750).
3. Sense and Sensibility.
II. Language and sensible reality: some timeless questions about the re-presentation.
1. Words and Things, Facts and Opinions, Words and Signs.
2. Conventionality, Motivation and Need. Some canonical texts.
3. Denotation and connotation. Signs and Symbols. The silent language.
III. Speech and Figures of speech.
1. Forms and Contents. Analysis of some contexts.
2. Contents and Forms. Analysis of some contexts.
3. From "Storytelling" to "Verbicidal" (Ch. Saumon). "How to do things with words" (Austin).
