Objectives
The main aim is to present the authors and representative works of philosophical thought throughout the Middle Ages and Early Modern Age in Portugal. Direct contact with the texts, the most recent literature and the work with research tools (journals, reference books, text databases, electronic resources) are aimed at deepening research skills.
Learning outcomes and competences
At the end of the CU students should:
— Know the main Portuguese thinkers of the Middle Ages and their works;
— Work with philosophical texts included in the program (reading, interpretation, explanation);
— Use secondary literature, distinguishing the one that is critically founded, of which that merely repeats or is simply eulogic;
— Expose independently and in a rigorous way (in a written paper and its presentation and discussion) the results of the research carried out on a topic, author or work, presenting as well the respective state of knowledge.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The syllabus is based on the reading and thorough study of texts and authors of the program. Their interpretation is situated in the development of institutions related to written culture (monasteries, scriptoria, libraries, schools, universities) and processes of contact and exchange with great cultural centres (coming of thinkers /masters, study abroad, circulation of books), bringing out thus the contribution of these authors to the discussion of central problems of philosophy. The syllabus also gives attention to the diversity of literary genres (sermon, summae, commentary, dialogue, treaty, question), their structures and intentionality. In some of the texts in studied particular the reception of the works of Aristotle.
Critical analysis skills are stimulated in order to improve the available editions, as well as to deepen the knowledge and access to unedited works or other less known authors.
