Objectives

- Knowledge of the issues, theories and concepts of Development Sociology.
- Understanding and analyzing the conceptual constructs and operationalization of key concepts in order to study the phenomenon of development at national and global levels.
- Understanding and framing the social Portuguese, European and global situation, allowing vectors to discern fundamental analysis to the understanding of new development scenarios.

Learning outcomes and competences

- Building capacity for reflection and critical analysis based on contemporary societies engaging the conceptual frameworks of sociology.
- Knowledge of the main structural features of contemporary Portuguese society and their integration within Europe and worldwide.
- Developing a culture of critical and reflective citizenship and professional attitudes based on ethical principles.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The classes have a theoretical and practical component (TP) and they are complemented by specific bibliography, developed summaries and supporting materials used in classes. The classes have also Tutorial sessions (OT), with analysis and production of documents and presentations on the topics, as well as the organization of visits and participation in conferences and seminars.

Eligibility for exams

The final evaluation has the model of Distributed evaluation with final exam, and it is realized with the completion of a written exam and a research work. Attendance is considered on the final weighting. All the evaluation items are mandatory.

Research work must be delivered at the last class of the 1st semestre of the curricular unit.

Calculation formula of final grade

Distributed evaluation with final exam: written exam (50%), research work (40%) and attendance (10%). Approval for the course has the condition that the marks obtained in the final written exam is equal to or higher than 10 and the work is equal to or greater than 8 values. Failure of this condition implies the transition to time of appeal.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students who, according to the Guidelines of FLUP, are not covered by the normal attendance component, are required to contact the teacher at the beginning of the period of operation of the discipline, for the establishment of related evaluation of knowledge.

Classification improvement

The student may apply for improving the classification in accordance with the Rules of the Faculty Evaluation. Improving classification focuses only on the final written exam and oral if necessary. It keeps the weight given to each of these components of evaluation and the conditions for approval for the course.
