1. Consolidation and development of syntactic knowledge in particular some complex sentences;
2. Learning of new ways of looking at some semantic aspects of Portuguese taking into account the semantics of words like nouns or the semantics of tense, aspect and mood and their influence at sentence and discourse levels.
Skills and Learning outcomes:
1. General capacity of linguistic reflection based on some theoretical proposals;
2. Implementation of rigorous methods in linguistic analysis by application of tests.
3. Knowledge of basic aspects of noun phrases including semantics of nouns, quantification and determiners, and modifiers, as well the syntax of complex sentences (subordination and coordination) and problems of sequence of tenses and mood in complex sentences.
As Portuguese shows some specificities, these learning outcomes are very valuable for translations to or from Portuguese.

2. Complement clauses
2.1.Complement clauses selected by nouns, adjectives and verbs.
2.2. Finite complement clauses in Subject and complement position
2.3. Mood selection in finite complement clauses
2.4. Non-finite complement clauses.
2.5. The inflected infinitive.
2.6. Tense in complement clauses.
III. COORDINATION
1.Nucleus, phrase and sentence coordination.

Some classes consist of theoretical presentations on the program topics and others will have practical exercises. There will be oral presentations made by the students during the semester final classes. The topics will be chosen considering identified problems in translation and the research will use a contrastive approach between Portuguese and the other language studied.
