Objectives

By the end of the semester students should reach an intermediate level between B1 and B2, as defined by the Common European Framework for languages.

Learning outcomes and competences

Students should have become more autonomous and should have acquired broader linguistic, socio-linguistic and pragmatic skills in order to be able to


1. understand extended speech, radio and TV programmes without too much effort;
2. understand increasingly complex factual and literary texts;
3. take part in discussion without much obvious searching for expressions;
4. present clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects integrating sub-themes, developing particular points and rounding off with an appropriate conclusion;
5. write reports and argumentative texts in a clear, concise and precise style appropriate to the reader in mind.

1. Self-assessment of knowledge and know-how using the CEFR self-assessment grid; identification of gaps and definition of strategies to fill them.
2. Oral skills development. 2.1. Understanding scientific communication and radio or TV programmes 2.2. Oral topic-specific presentation followed by a debate. 2.3. Oral presentation on a novel.
3. Writing and reading skills development. 3.1. Reading of a novel, essays, scientific papers and technical texts. 3.2. Strengthening of skills in writing descriptive, narrative and argumentative texts. 3.3. Introduction to the methodology and tools available to write reports. 3.4. Reading report on the novel
4. Linguistic, socio-linguistic and pragmatic skills development. 4.1. Strengthening of language skills and extension of grammar skills (in particular: modes and tenses, reported speech, emphasis, modality, logical links, cohesion and coherence). 4.2. Lexical enrichment (single words, phrases, collocations, ...) 4.3.Strengthening and widening the mastering of language registers 4.4. Raising the awareness of cultural and linguistic diversity within the Francophonie. 4.5. OIF: goals and key issues. 4.6. Organization, structure and adequacy of discourse.
