Objectives

The main objectives of this course (UC) are:

-Bringing students to the knowledge of sixteenth-century Spanish literature giving special attention to the transition between the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

- Situate this literary period in the historical context of the XVI century.

-Understand the main features of this literature: authors, genres, themes, aesthetics.

-Critically analyse representative texts of the genres and of the most significant authors of this period.

Learning outcomes and competences

All the contents of the syllabus are programmed in a way to make students achieve the objectives listed above since their specification was taken from the analysis of these objectives.

With the objective of offering students a guide oriented reflection on Spanish Literature of the Renaissance, the literary contents of this crucial period of Spanish literature will all be contextualised and related to the historical, ideological and cultural context of the sixteenth century, establishing links with the Middle Ages.
Literary texts of the most representative authors of this period will be used as a crucial reference to enable students to understand the main features of this literature (authors, literary genres, themes and aesthetics, particularly Ascetic and Mystic Literature), and to give them the necessary tools to present a critic analysis.

Teaching methods and learning activities

In this course students will have theoretical-practical sessions (lectures and seminars) in which interactivity will be fundamental. Classes will be taught in Spanish, although students are allowed to submit both class assignments/presentations and exams in Portuguese. They will also have support materials available on Sigarra.

The required readings for this course are:

-A selection of poems available on Sigarra
-"La lozana andaluza" - Francisco Delicado
-"Lazarillo de Tormes"

With the main objective of bringing students to the knowledge of sixteenth-century Spanish literature giving special attention to the transition between the Middle Ages and Renaissance, we shall briefly recall the main features of the Middle Ages, establishing links between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, both at an aesthetic level, through different art representations (literature, painting, sculpture), and at a socio-political, economic, religious and cultural level, encouraging interactivity among students, as these skills are part of the European culture.

Next, we will start dealing with the main literary genres of XVI century, starting with poetry: the petrarquismo of Garcilaso and the ascetic and mystic poetry through a critical analysis of the representative poems of Garcilaso, fray Luis de León, san Juan de la Cruz and santa Teresa de Jesús.

Since in the exams / tests students are required to analyse a poetic text from the compulsory readings and due to the fact that not all students are familiar with this type of analysis, the approach to this part of the UC will consist of giving particular importance to practice in seminars. In addition, students will have the support materials available on Sigarra and will be able to look up the bibliography of the UC, especially CARRETER LÁZARO, F. and CORREA CALDERÓN, E., Cómo se comenta un texto literario, Cátedra, Madrid, 1981.

Subsequently, we will start the study of the Renaissance Prose: "Celestinesco" Genre, Humanistic Prose, Picaresque Novel and other novelistic genres. Throughout the lessons we will comment on La lozana andaluza (compulsory reading), Diálogo de las cosas ocurridas en Roma, and in particular Lazarillo de Tormes (compulsory reading) at a theoretical and practical level, starting from the analysis of representative excerpts.

This methodology will lead to the development of the skills mentioned in the objectives and will allow students to acquire a solid theoretical knowledge, applying it on the critical analysis of texts. In addition, the optional tasks (presentation of another literary work recommended by the teacher) will broaden their knowledge on this matter.

Classes will be taught in Spanish, although students can participate in the classes, write and present assignments and write the exams in Portuguese.
