Objectives

By the end of the semester, students should have reached B2 level in most of the five skills set by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Learning outcomes and competences

Successful students will have developed their independence and their linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic skills in order to be able to:

1. understand extended speech about familiar topics (lectures), international news TV programmes and films in standard dialect;

2. read editorials about the Francophonie and the world, and to read contemporary literary prose;

3. take an active part in discussion in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining their views;

4. present a clear, detailed short speech on a wide range of familiar subjects;

5. write well-structured texts in a clear, precise and concise style appropriate for the reader in mind.

2.1. Understanding lectures, TV news and current affairs programmes.

3.1. Reading a contemporary novel.

3.2. Selection and comprehension of opinion pieces.

4. Development of linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic skills

4.1. Consolidation of gains and development of grammar and textual skills: comparison, modality, tenses and moods, complex sentence, reported speech, logical links, cohesion and coherence.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Interactive and task-oriented approach.

The proposed activities aim to develop students’ skills and autonomy by completing various tasks, individually or in a group, in order to achieve results to be shared in class or on the Moodle platform. These tasks include (1) search for lexical information to be shared on the e-learning platform (glossary); (2) search for opinion pieces and language resources to be commented and shared on the e-learning platform (forum); (3) group role-playing exercises (debates) and individual oral presentations; (4) writing reports and short argumentative essays; (5) listening, reading and multimedia comprehension of authentic oral, written or multimedia materials; (6) reflection on learning outcomes in the student’s “diary” available on Moodle platform.
