Portuguese

Objectives

1 – To make students aware of phonetic realizations of languages, and of Portuguese particularly. . 2 – To prepare students for basic procedures such as phonetic transcription. 3 – To deepen students’ explicit knowledge of Portuguese grammar, specially in the domains of morphology and phonology. 4 – To provide students with basic notions of articulatory phonetics, phonolgy and morphology of Portuguese. 5 – To make students familiar with the concepts and procedures of linguistic analysis used in phonology and morphology and to make them able to use such tools in analysing Portuguese. 6 – To make students aware of the isseus related to phonetic variation.

Learning outcomes and competences

The student should be able to: use basic procedures of phonetic transcription; understand and describe basic concepts in the domains ofarticulatory phonetics, phonology and morphology; use morphological and phonological analysis tools in the description of Portuguese language.

1 – Phonetic transcription of Portuguese. 1.1 – Basic principles of a system of phonetic transcription. 1.2 – The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). 1.3 – IPA symbols and conventions used in transcribing Portuguese. 1.4 – Phonetic transcription of dialectal varieties of Portuguese. 2 – Articulatory phonetics of Portuguese. 2.1 –Phonation and the phonatory system. 2.2 – Description and traditional articulatory classification of Portuguese sounds. 3 – Dialectal variation in Portuguese. 3.1 – Norm and variation. 3.2 – European and non-European varieties of Contemporary Portuguese. 4 – Segmental aspects of Portuguese phonology. 4.1 – Segment inventory. 4.2 – Distributiona patterns of segments. 4.3 – Some specific issues in the study of segmental phonology of Portuguese: 4.3.1 – “Nasal vowels”. 4.3.2 – Stressed vs. unstressed vowels. 5 – Prosodic aspects of the phonology of Portuguese. 5.1 – Syllabic structures in Portuguese. 5.2 – Word-stress in Portuguese. 6 – Morphological aspects of Portuguese: the interaction phonology-morphology. 6.1 – Morphological word and prosodic word in Portuguese. 6.2 – The words’ internal structure in Portuguese. 6.3 – Lexical forms and grammatical forms. 6.4 – Verbal inflection. 6.5 – Nominal inflection. 6.6 – Derivation in Portuguese. 6.7 – Compounds in Portuguese. 6.8 – Allomorphy in Portuguese.
