Objectives
AIMS: This course aims, first of all, to provide students a series of introductory references on authors, genres and concepts of the history of theatre in Portugal during the 18th and 19th centuries. Secondly, the information will also lead the student to overcome the introductory references and find in them the tools for a full review of the theatre and the history of theatre, and dramaturgy.
Learning outcomes and competences
SKILLS: Over the semester, students must be able to: a) reflect on the concepts of “history” and “theatre” in 18th and 19th century Portugal; b)Know and/or recognise some canonical texts on Portuguese playwrights and the so-called “prevalent” genres of the contemporary period, and whenever possible, be aware of limitations of such canonicity; c)Understand the strengths and frailties of national and civilisation concepts of the history of theatre; d) assess the variety and vitality, and rhetoric and aesthetics of dramas and texts on the Portuguese theatre.

I. The History and the Story of the Theatre: culture and memory. 1.“Homo sapiens” and “Homo ludens”. 2. Concepts of “paradramaticidade”/“paradramaturgical activities” and “teatralidade” /“theatricalness”. 3. Theatre History: some questions about Time in Place.
II. Portuguese theatre history during the Contemporary Age
1. The 18th century read by the 19th century theatre: a) the national theatre and the “Volksgeist”; b) the "theory of clime” and the opposition between classics and romantics; c) refounding the Chorus: d) the concpt of "tragédie bourgeoise"; e) some texts of Diderot about the theater and the actor. Reading of "A Mulher que o não parece", of Manuel de Figueiredo.
2. The 19th century and the labirynths of the “icastic mimesis”: a) Garrett, a reader of Figueiredo; b) the project of a national theatre; c) definitions of "a romantic drama"; d) the (r)evolution of melodrama; e) some texts of Victor Hugo about the fonctions of Theatre. Reading of "Frei Luís de Sousa" of Almeida Garrett.
3. The role of Parodic: a) Gomes de Amorim and "Fígados de Tigre"; b) desconstruction of the ultra-romantic and naturalist drama; c) Offenbach's influence; d) some texts of Pessoa and Almada. Reading of "A Ceia dos Cardeais", of Júlio Dantas and some parodics.
4. The 20th century questioning old "aristotelic" rules: a) the simbolist play; b) the crualty theater; c) the poor theatre; d) the living theatre; e) some texts of Artaud, Grotowski and Brecht. Reading of "Pedro, o Cru", of António Patrácio.
