Students should have knowledge of the most relevant issues and thinkers in Ethics.
Students should reach a profound level of autonomy in critical thinking.
I. Fundamental ethical theories
Ancient times: Aristotle, Epicurus and Stoicism.
Medieval Times: Christian Morality.
Modern Times: Hume and Kant
XIXth century: Hegel, Stuart Mill, Karl Marx and Nietzsche
XXth century: Max Scheler, E. Lévinas, Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre and José Luis L. Aranguren, Karl-Otto Apel, Hans Jonas, John Rawls.
XXIth century: Jürgen Habermas, Robert Misrahi, and Edgar Morin. II. Ethics in Philosophy in Portugal: authors and brief guidelines.
Theory-practical classes - Lectures on the programme themes, encouraging the participation of students. In tutorials: Critical approach and discussion of course unit contents, including the discussion of theoretical issues raised; foster the discussion among students, moderated by the lecturer; oral presentation of reports and of work carried out during the autonomous study periods; discussion of works regarded as essential.
