Objectives

This course teaches students the principles and techniques of information representation and will help them to demonstrate the ability and competence in applying techniques, standards and other instruments for organizing and representing information and database construction.

Learning outcomes and competences

Understand the theoretical and methodological principles for the organization and representation of information.

Understand the structure of information retrieval tools.

Acquire the ability to use and apply standards of bibliographic and archival description.

1. Organizing and representing information: contextualization in both technical and morphological poles of the “quadripolar” method. 2. The information flow: production/reunion-treatment-use/diffusion. 3. Accessing information: concepts and instruments. 4. Principles and cataloguing standards. 4.1. International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD). 4.2. The ISBD(G) - General International Standard Bibliographic Description. 4.2.1. The necessary data elements to identify documents/information. 4.2.2. Sources of information 4.2.3. Outline of the ISBD, punctuation data elements order. 4.3. ISBD for specific type of documents: ISBD(M), ISBD(CR), ISBD(ER), ISBD(NBM), ISBD(CM). 4.4. FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) – the impact on the future ISBD program. 4.5. The ISBD consolidated: scope and structure. Reasons for their appearance. 4.6. Guidelines for the application of the ISBDs to the description of Component Parts 5. Teaching methods and learning activities

Lessons will be both practical and theoretical, with emphasis on student involvement, and will consist of lecture, discussion and some in-class exercises of bibliographic description of all sorts of documents, using the international standards.
