Objectives

Students who successfully complete this class will:
• be able to analyse multimedia texts and their multiple semiotic systems, paying special attention to the interaction between different codes;
• make accurate use of the terminology used in subtitling, surtitling and web page localisation;
• be familiar with the professional process of multimedia translation and the different steps it involves;
• be able to locate and use the multiple resources available for subtitlers on the Internet;
• practise their language and technical skills needed to subtitle an audiovisual programme, to surtitle theatre and to translate web pages ;
• produce adequate interlingual subtitles, surtitles and web pages on the basis of their purpose, type and audience;
• be able to recognise and propose solutions for translation problems posed by specific cultural issues;
• be able to apply the conventions of good subtitling, surtitling and web page translation practice.

Program

This introductory course is designed to give students the opportunity to develop the main skills (linguistic, cultural, translational, technical) required of a professional multimedia translator, as well as their ability to summarise. Presentations and class discussions will focus on topics such as:
• Overview of multimedia translation and main concepts and terminology.
• Multimedia products, their main constituent parts and specificities, namely the interaction between different semiotic systems and the conventions appropriate to each type of multimedia product.
• Directed tasks : subtitling, surtitling and web page localisation
• Effective use of subtitling and html editor softwares.
