Objectives

Students must get familiar with some particular aspects of Spanish literature in the 16th century.

Program

1. Introduction to Renaissance Literature.
2. Poetry in the 16th century:
2.1. First Renaissance Poetry: Garcilaso de la Vega.
2.2. Second Renaissance Poetry:: Fray Luis de León.
2.3. Ascetic and Mystic Literature: San Juan de la Cruz and Santa Teresa de Jesús.
3. Renaissance Prose:
3.1. "Celestinesco" Genre.
3.2. Humanistic Prose: Juan and Alfonso de Valdés.
3.3. Picaresque Novel: Lazarillo de Tormes.
3.4. Novel of Chivalry.
3.5. Pastoral Novel.
4. Theater in the 16th century: typology of dramatic genres.

Eligibility for exams

Class attendance minimum of 75% of the lessons, except in the predicted cases.

Calculation formula of final grade

Mandatory assignments for all students 10% (maximum: 2 points out of 20).
Written exam: 90% (maximum: 18 points out of 20).

Students who do not hand in the mandatory assignments are not allowed the possibility to apply for the final exam.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Mandatory assignments: personal and individual summary of an article about theatre from the 16th century (available in "documents") and resolution of a complete reading worksheet on a literary work. Students should choose one of the following:
- La lozana andaluza
- Diálogo de las cosas ocurridas en Roma

Written exam: Answering a theorethical question/s and textual analysis. Under no circumstances are students allowed to consult documents during the exam. Only a pen and paper are permitted.

Observations

Classes are taught in spanish, although students may write the exams and even present their assignments/tasks either in portuguese or spanish,being given the chance to choose the language they are more comfortable with.
