Objectives
To provide students with a frequent and in-depth contact with some of the most important texts of Castilian literature of the 12th and 13th centuries. Draw the aesthetic, cultural and social context in which the said texts were prepared and received. Stimulate students to understand the role of literary production in this period in the general discussion of culture and identity of Spain.

2. From the epic tales to the “cantar de gesta”
2.1 Cantar de Mio Cid and its problems
2.2 The theme of Cid in the Latin and Romance historiography
2.3 Epic traditions, “cantar de gesta” and the collection of romances
3. A Castilian specificity: the “mester de clerecia” (Ministry of Clergy)
3.1 Literary awareness and formal construction
3.2 Hagiography, propaganda and the art of narrating in Gonzalo de Berceo
3.3 The epic traditions and the “mester de clerecia”: The poem of Fernán Gonzalez
3.4 The Mocedades de Rodrigo and the late “cantar de gesta”.

In addition to the extensive literature references, most recommended editions have interpretative and contextual introductions that will help the first analysis of the works to which they relate. More specific literature will be indicated by the lecturer during the year.
