Objectives

The objective of this course is to introduce students to Spanish Literature of the 20th century through a selection of texts. The texts will be placed into context by dealing with the different literary issues that they arise, as well as their relation with the arts, history and thinking of their time.

Program

I. La literatura española antes de la Guerra Civil: 1900 - 1939.
1. Tras el desastre de 1898: Unamuno, Baroja, Azorín y Valle-Inclán.
2. La renovación de la poesía y el teatro: Antonio Machado y Juan Ramón Jiménez. Valle-Inclán.
3. Los Modernos y las primeras vanguardias: Ortega y Gasset. Ramón Gómez de la Serna.
4. La nueva literatura: la lírica en la Generación del 27.
5. El teatro de Federico García Lorca.
II. La literatura española posterior a 1939.
1. La novela de los años 40 y 50: de lo existencial a lo social.
2. La novela a partir de 1960: renovación de las técnicas narrativas. Luis Martín Santos: Tiempo de silencio.
3. Juan Marsé: Últimas tardes con Teresa (1966).
4. Aproximación a las tendencias poéticas y teatrales después de 1939.
