Objectives

1. Provide an overview of how Portuguese literature (poetry and novels) developed in the 16th century
2. Study in greater death the literary innovations introduced by the narrative of Bernardim Ribeiro, regarding the common practices in the sentimental and chivalry Iberian literature.
3. Delimit and define the specific features of the literary practices of Sá de Miranda, António Ferreira and Luís de Camões within the Renaissance lyric poetry and its theoretical concepts.

1. Humanism and Renaissance: the European historical-cultural context and its impact in Portugal.

2. The renewal of aesthetic practices: poetry and the novel.
2.1. The renewal of narrative practices in mid-16th century: from the knight to the sentimental amateur. Critical reading of the chivalric adventure.
2. 1.1. Bernardim Ribeiro and História de Menina e Moça (1554).
2.1.2. The literary discussion; from the issue of gender to the issue of meaning.
2.1.3. From the chivalric narrative to the fiction of courtly sentimental novel.

2.2. Tradition and poetic renewal in the 16th century in Portugal.
2.2.1. The poetry of Dr. Francisco de Sá de Miranda and the introduction of Petrarchism in
Portugal.
2.2.2. Poemas Lusitanos by Dr. António Ferreira and the assertiveness of Classicism.


3. Luís de Camões – literary representative and critical conscience of the Portuguese Renaissance:
3.1. The 1595 and 1598 editions of Rimas. The canon.
3.2. The Petrarchism of Camões and the autobiography.
3.3. The love theme and the world view of Camões lyric poetry.
