Objectives

Students should be able to
reflect and critically debate on major public events, achievements , cultural agents , issues and problems experienced in the Portuguese society of the twentieth century based on the availability of facts of indisputable objectivity and social relevance, of rational and productive operating schemes, as well as of syntheses and frames of secure context. The students will be encouraged to optimize a new and a deeper understanding of the present time and a clear and personalized self-cultural awareness, marked, necessarily, by the experience of the whole vast and complex universe of emerging changes in the political process started with April 25, 1974 and the integration of our country in the European Union.

Program

1. Republican culture, society and power. The Portugal of October 5, from the memories of José Relvas.
2. History and national identity.
a. Teixeira de Pascoaes in the definition of 'soul' and of the Portuguese Renaissance.
b. The renewal of historiographical studies during the First Republic. Historiography of Voyages of Discovery. Jaime Cortesão.
c. Writing and 'deconstruction' of History by debating the points of view. António Sardinha and António Sérgio.
3. Portuguese intellectuals and artists before the political difficulties of the twenties. Diversity of options, ideo-political and aesthetic groups. Manifestos and polemics. The course of António Ferro.
4. May 28 and the genesis of Salazarism.
a. Doctrinal core of principles of the Constitution of 1933 and the 'Corporative State'.
b. Art, literature and science as ' facade of nationality”. Vectors of 'political entrepreneurship'. A contextualized reading of the great exhibitions of the Regime.
5. From the “primavera marcelista” to European integration: the great social and cultural changes of the democratic regime.
