Objectives

The aim of this subject is to provide students with knowledge in three areas: analysis of linguistic variation theories and study methods; its application in the specific field of the history of the Portuguese language; and its integration in a more general perspective, within the scope of Romance linguistics.

Program

1. Introduction.
1.1. Brief reference to research in historical linguistics.
1.2 Object and methodology of historical linguistics. Sources for knowledge of linguistic history. Critique of evidence.
2. From Latin to Portuguese.
2.1. Pragmatic, sociolinguistic and linguistic characterisation of vernacular Latin; main phonetic and phonologic, morphologic, syntactic and lexical features that distinguish it from classical Lat.
2.2. Romanisation of the Iberian Peninsula: characterisation of the “Iberian block” within the scope of Romania; linguistic fragmentation of the Peninsula. Substrata and superstrata.
2.3. Linguistic individuality in the North-West of the Peninsula. Linguistic consequences of the reconquest and its repercussions in the Portuguese dialectal panorama.
3 . Medieval Portuguese.
3.1. Problems resulting from the identification of the historical linguistic periods: fluctuation, dominant tendencies and linguistic pattern.
3.2. Vocal apparatus (stressed and unstressed); hiatuses; nasal endings; consonant system; morphologic and syntactic traits; lexical imports.
3.3. Argumentative medieval texts: analysis of specific structures.
3.4. The movement of the decision centre and of the linguistic pattern towards the south. Major changes: resolution of hiatuses by crasis, diphthongisation or consonant interference; convergence of nasal endings; changes in nominal and verbal morphology; the evolution of the lexicon, particularly with regard to the Latin imports.
4. Classic and modern Portuguese.
4.1. Innovative phonetic and morphological traits: simplification of the system of sibilants; the problem of reduction of unstressed vowels. Connections between dialectology and history of language: evidences of conservative dialectal areas, Portuguese from Brazil and Portuguese Creoles. The action of the analogy in the regularisation of paradigms.
4.2. Development of the linguistic pattern definition and progressive reduction of the linguistic fluctuation; alteration of the concepts in written Portuguese (from the phonological to the etymological dominant); re-Latinisation of the language: replacement of vernacular forms by erudite forms, learned import of classic Latin forms. The knowledge of language by the 16th century grammarians, transformation of relative behaviours regarding language and linguistic practices.
4.3. Changes after the 16th century: at phonetic level: simplification of the affricates graphically represented by ch; palatisation of the implosive s; differentiation of the diphthong ei, differentiation of the trill, and reduction of unstressed vowels. Evolution of the pronominal and verbal systems in relation to the 5th person. Evolution of lexicon throughout the period: losses and gains; types of linguistic imports.
4.4 Linguistic evolution and orthographic reforms.
