Objectives

This subject is intended to provide students with an overall understanding of Portuguese-speaking Cape Verdean Literature, from the beginnings until the present day, by acquainting them with a number of texts of some of its most significant writers. In addition, Cape Verdean Literature is lectured on purpose in the final semester so that – in contrast to the other African Literatures studied in the past 3 semesters - the features that make it unique can be pointed out, within the general context of the “Portuguese-speaking African Literatures”.

1.2. Aesthetic-philosophical ‘Cape Verdianess’:
- “evasionismo” and “terralongismo”
- Cape Verdian mythemes and philosophemes
2. Origins: Pedro Cardoso and Eugénio Tavares
3. “Geração da Claridade” (The ‘Claridade’* Movement) : Jorge Barbosa, Manuel Lopes and Baltazar Lopes
4. “Grupo da Certeza” (The ‘Certeza’* Movement) and the Neorealistic attempt to shift over to an africanizing capeverdianess.
