Objectives

SCIENTIFIC-PEDAGOGICALOBJECTIVES

- Analysis of the theories and concepts in Sociology of Development, taking into account a theoretical approach that is closely articulated with an understanding of contemporary social realities on the local, national and global scales;

- Focus on recent theoretical and empirical evolutions in the domain of Development and “quality of life”, based on a study of the social phenomena that define those issues.

- To pay particular attention to the characteristics and the local and national institutional frameworks that define the issue of Development in the current Portuguese society;

- Understanding of the theoretical and conceptual instruments used in analysing development dynamics and models in Portugal;

- Prospective analysis of the characteristics and tendencies of development and quality of life at a national, European and global level.

1. Conceptual framework.
1.1.Analysis of the historical and conceptual evolution of the Development theory.
1.2.Conceptual issues on Quality of Life: emergence and evolution of the concept.

2. Theoretical models: from “original development” to “alternative paradigms.”
2.1. Analysis of Development on a global scale.
2.1.1. Development and underdevelopment.
2.1.2. The Third World.
2.2. Imperialism and Globalisation.
2.2.1. Development as a process.
2.2.2. The role of international relations.
2.2.3. The role of international institutions.

3. Quality of life and the Portuguese social structure.
3.1. Analysis of the main trends of the current social situation.
3.2. The new problems of development and quality of life in Portugal.
3.3. Territory and local development. Endogenicities in the theory of Development.
3.4. The theory of endogenous development.

4. Prospective analysis on the “new social issues” at the national, European and global level: public policies and their role in “quality of life”.

5. References to the territory and to the main indicators in Portugal.
